As soon as the little “+” appeared on our home pregnancy test (OK, even before that) I started stockpiling pregnancy books. What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Your Pregnancy Week by Week, The Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy … I have devoured them all.
But there are a few things the books didn’t tell me. Lots of little things don’t merit a mention in the handbooks, but they make the whole journey something I’ll miss when the baby comes.
1. It’s a lot like puberty.
The mood swings and body changes associated with pregnancy should not be news to anyone. I have slid from seething rage to clingy affection with the greatest of ease, and marveled each day at the rapid growth of my new “circus boobs.” But I soon started to realize that, as new as it all was, the whole thing seemed awfully familiar. One night at dinner, as my lip trembled and then gave way to full-on tears, I realized, “I remember this feeling … from sixth grade.”
2. You’ll do enough research to write your own book.
Once you’ve read the standard handbooks from cover to cover, you’ll feel like there’s nothing left to do but wait. Ha. Have you read up on the C-section rate and written a birth plan? Have you carefully thought about finding a doula? Are you aware that just registering for your shower will require a Ph.D. in Baby Furniture and Assorted Accoutrements?
3. Strangers will be nicer to you.
This was an unexpected perk. I had heard pregnant women complain that strangers always wanted to touch their bellies, but there must have been a successful campaign to stop this practice”it has never once happened to me. Still, strangers do notice and ask about the belly. Except for one clerk (who chastised me for buying a Snickers bar), the feedback has been all sweetly curious and helpful. Old men help me lift bags of dog food into my shopping cart. Women inquire about my due date and wish me well. Even surly-looking teenagers linger to hold doors for me.
